Bast of Egypt

 This artwork was originally created as a pet portrait for a supporter on Kickstarter by fantasy artist Anthony Christou. The artwork was created to represent the pet cat but was also inspired by the legends of cats in Ancient Egypt where they were worshipped as servants of the great Goddesses, Bastet, Mafdet, Sekhmet and Mut (Fertility, Justice, Power and Mother Goddess).

Cats were very important in Ancient Egypt, both as snake and rat catchers but also as magical creatures, they were thought of as protective entities. They were often treated royally and have even been found as mummies with cemeteries devoted only to them.
