Griffin of Protection

This painting by award winning, fantasy artist Anthony Christou was inspired by Greek Griffins or Gryphons.

Griffins have appeared in many forms all around the world including some of the earliest being found in Iran and Egypt. However few are as famous as the griffons from Greek Mythology, masters of the sky. It was often thought in Greek mythology that Griffins were creatures that lived in Central Asia and were thought to often to create nests near treasure.

The griffins of Greek mythology had a big influence on later medieval depictions. However their focus at this point changed from being creatures that protected treasure to guardians of divine power.
